Up and coming, charming and uncommercial, Oléron is not that much further from La Rochelle than the swanky Ile de Ré, but it’s a lot less crowded and the bridge that connects it to the mainland is toll free. Head 30-40 minutes inland or round the coast and you’ll find your budget will go much further. Fouras, overlooking Fort Boyard, is a charming coastal town with sandy beaches, a castle, super covered market and a bustling little town. Beach lovers will enjoy Point d’Espagnole on the Côte Sauvage, south of Rochefort. La Tremblade is a well-kept secret with great beaches backed by sand dunes and pine forests. Rochefort is a lively town with beautiful buildings, a great range of shops and restaurants and plenty going on year-round. Purpose built in the 17th century to house military dockyards, the town’s Corderie Royale (royal rope factory) is famous. Further inland, Port d’Envaux, once a strategic commercial port, is now a vibrant village on the banks of the River Charente with a river beach and water activities galore.
